Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Parents and Welcome to 2015!  January is a time for new beginnings, which is why the First Grade Team, is taking this opportunity to "Go Back to the Basics".  As we get back into the groove of first grade we will:

*Focus on math facts with a fun Math Wizards unit.  Each student will get their own number and find as many ways to reach that number.  They will use a "spell book" to master their math facts, which are crucial for 2nd grade.

*Get a refresher on classroom and school rules.

*Emphasize the importance of neat handwriting.  Each student will make a best work sample of their neatest handwriting and strive to make all their work match.  You can help at home too!  If you see your child holding the pencil incorrectly or forming letters incorrectly, please take the opportunity to reinforce good proper hand grips and letter formation.

*Review sight words in spelling.  Sight words, often called high frequency sight words, are commonly used words that children are encouraged to memorize as a whole word by sight so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode. We would like to see students spelling these words correctly more consistently in their writing.
